Overcaste - WIP

Overcaste is a 3D adventure game about a sand-shifter protecting her home, the desert, from futuristic invading forces. We are focusing on dynamic traversal, exploration, and the aesthetics of the world as we iterate and polish on previously done things.

For this project, I am working mostly on the VFX and materials, and co-working on the level design.

Work I Did

  • Sand trails - they use render textures and a camera to render whatever part of the player is close to the landscape and then deform the landscape

  • Sand storms - using a volume - Player particles - When the player moves fast, particles sampled from the player's mesh fly off of the player

  • Sprint boost particles - When the player uses the sprint boost a ring shoots out and sand flies out from their feet

  • Wind blowing on sand - a texture pans across the desert material to act as wind blowing. When the wind blows, that part of the terrain will rise up, otherwise it will lower.
